What We're About!

For starters I want to emphasize that you do not have to be gay, bi, transgender, etc. to be a part of this club!

We are a group of people gathering to discuss and promote equality and discourage the derogatory assumptions about homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgender.

What would we do?

Open discussion, guest speakers, volunteering, events, rallies, writing, you name it.

What would we discuss?

I want an "open discussion" type forum at our meetings because I want the members to have a safe place to talk about what's going on in their lives; the good, the bad, and the ugly! Just somewhere completely free to cut loose and be yourself!

Guest speakers?

I want to get people from outside the school to come in and share their story with us. (We may also have weeks where we will spotlight one of our own members, upon request.) Artists, Writers, Community Leaders, anyone I can get a hold of. (This may be difficult at first, but we'll get them in!)

*Our second meeting I will be inviting a personal friend to come speak.

Events?

We definitely need fun events! We may ti-dye shirts at our second meeting, have outings like ice skating, etc. One larger event I think would be really fun (if we could get it approved) is a drag fashion show. This would involve fashion majors to work with drag kings and queens, students not majoring in fashion can help plan and decorate the event. I also had a plan last year for an LGBT pumpkin carving where the proceeds get donated. Any ideas are appreciated!

Volunteering?

I would like the club to participate in all different types of volunteer work. It is something I am passionate about, and hope the members will be too. I would like to volunteer in various ways (homeless shelters, animal shelters, ActionAIDS, EqualityPennsylvania, etc.) and hold events with the purpose of donating proceeds to important causes. (ActionAids, EqualityPennsylvania, etc.)

Politics?

I am very involved in politics and when it comes down to it I think everyone should be, at least a little bit. This past year two more states have voted yes on gay marriage, but its only 9 out of 50. (Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Washington, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.) Without awareness and support of the movement, it will never come to fruition.

Club "Government"?

So like I said I am not the most organized person, or the best with time management. I definitely need someone, or a couple people to help keep the club on track. I may be starting the club but its everyone's club, not just mine. Even if you don't want to help with the responsibility of brainstorming and scheduling activities, your input is valued!

Important Info!

So here's some stuff I told you guys I would post!!!

1.) The diner for the Ronald McDonald house that DuPont Hospital is organizing (where my mother is employed) is on April 14th which is on a Sunday about 4 &1/2 weeks from now. I figured that Saturday, April 13th, around diner time we could all get together in the penthouse in Stahl to make something like a cake or cupcakes, brownies, etc. We can make whatever we want and I will buy the ingredients ahead of time after we decide what we'd like to make.

Unfortunately I don't think we can all attend the diner, but for those interested in joining me I can inquire about that. Otherwise I will just bring the food and represent us since I am already planning on attending.

2.) Equality Forum - The Global LGBT Summit is May 2nd-5th which is Thursday-Sunday. If you want to look up the details on your own you can at equalityforum.com!

Different events are located at different locations like the University of the Arts, the National Constitution Center, but mostly at UA just in different rooms/studios. So please check out the program schedule online! (It would probably take me an hour to type it all out here lol.)

There are volunteer options if you want to get involved. I am considering it myself. You would help with panels, parties, etc. it's a great way to help out and meet people! Go online to check the details and register. I think I'm actually going to register right now so let me know if anyone else is going to!

The is an art exhibit at the William Way LGBT Community Center (located on 1315 Spruce Street) for the entire duration of the summit which I think would be interesting to take a look at! They will be showing the work of Vuth Lyno. It will be open during the week 9am - 10pm and on weekends at 11am-7pm. Lyno will be lecturing at the University of the Arts, Terra Hall, 211 South Broad Street in Studio 1504 on Thursday May 2nd at 11:30am. It is free to attend. (I have class so I can't go ugh.)

3.) LGBT Prom! Is on April 12th which is a Friday about 4 weeks from now.

I am unsure if I will be attending due to the specific screening of Miyazaki's newest film being that night here in Philly. I am a complete Miyazaki freak so I was already planning on going to that. BUT we'll see, and this does not mean at you guys can't go!

It is located at Bucks County Community College; 275 Swamp Road, Newtown, PA. Tickets are on sale at the door for $10. It starts at 6pm and goes until 10pm. The theme is Masquerade so grab your gowns and masks and dance your asses off queer style. Wow I'm lame.

If you're interested just email me and I can invite you on Facebook so you can check the details for yourself. (I don't want to spam you guys with invites if you're not interested.)

In the mean time I am working on planning another speaker meeting, hopefully this Sunday, but I won't know until my speaker gets their work schedule! This time it will be my friend Bob who I've asked to speak due to his experience in coming out in high school.

I thought the "Sex-Ed" day was an interesting idea! How would we go about doing this? I think more speakers would help and then some kind of lecture, but by whom? I'm not sure if I'd be the most appropriate choice, I am horrible with public speaking haha. Please any thoughts on this get back to me! It is really unnerving how much people don't know and we could use this event as an opportunity to educate our peers on topics such as transgenders. (I'd probably bring Mattie back to touch on that topic.) And this would be a larger event, open to the public.

I really want to plan like a cook-out picnic once the weather gets better! We would probably charge a flat fee for food and donate the proceeds. I would like help on planning it and deciding where to donate. It would be completely open to inviting friends/family. I will definitely be inviting my gay-tourage haha. I also have friends that dress in drag that I have already contacted so they will serve almost as a form of entertainment. Since it will be in public I'm not really certain of the rules on booze, but I am not opposed just as long as everyone remains responsible. If I cannot get Moore to fund this, I will take it out of my pocket to front the money for food, etc. until we receive donations.

And of course the pride parades! I will post on this later and we will continue to talk about it as they get closer!

Definitely check out the Philly Gay Calendar for events going on in the city! You can find it at phillygaycalendar.com

I'm working on a Tumblr as we speak so everything will get transferred soon. Ill keep you posted!
Thanks guys, love ya!

(Excuse all typos and incorrect grammar it is 4am and I can't sleep!)
